Monty James (Idris Elba) is a hardworking Georgia mechanic and single father. He is raising his daughters China (China Anne McClain), Lauryn (Lauryn Alissa McClain) and Sierra (Sierra Aylina McClain). He works one job for gas station owner Willie (Louis Gosset Jr.) and a second as a chauffeur for a variety of clients including snooty corporate lawyer Julia Rossmore (Gabrielle Union). When the girls’ elderly grandmother dies their no-good mother Jennifer (Tasha Smith) decides she wants custody. One of the girls accidentally starts a fire in Monty’s apartment so state authorities place the children temporarily with Jennifer and her drug dealer boyfriend Joseph (Gary Sturgis). The two use the girls to sell marijuana at school and plan to put the oldest girl out on the street. They will do anything to keep them and the money they earn. Monty turns to Julia as the only lawyer he knows. She agrees to take the case. Despite obvious attraction between the two she insists she doesn’t fraternize with the help. However during the long court proceedings and despite warnings from her upper class friends Ivy League Julia falls for blue collar Monty.
