Charlie Fineman (Adam Sandler) is a man lost in the world. His wife and children were killed in the terrorist attack on September the Eleventh, and the tragedy left him grief stricken and barely able to live life. Alan Johnson (Don Cheadle) is a successful dentist and family man, but bristles under the pressures of daily life. A chance meeting between the two men starts to change both for the better. They are not actually strangers, but estranged former college roommates. Soon, Charlie begins seeing a therapist, Angela Oakhurst (Liv Tyler), and forges a relationship of sorts with Alan's family. Alan also benefits from having a friend and confidant to remind him of who he used to be. As in life, things do not proceed smoothly, but the film ends with both men in a better place.
