Chaos begins with a wealthy family living in Paris. The family consists of Paul and Hélène and a son Fabrice who is in college. One day, Hélène and Paul are driving and see a prostitute being beat by three pimps. Hélène feels horribly about it and goes to the hospital to help the woman the next day. She meets her and befriends the prostitute. She learns that her name is Noémie and helps her with her recovery. Hélène does not feel that Noémie is safe in the hospital and thus brings her to Paul's mother's house. As the prostitute regains her speech, Hélène learns that she is a French-Algerian immigrant and that her real name is Malika. Hélène begins to see a growth within as her friend grows in strength and comfort.
