The Mummy (1932) Starring: Boris Karloff, Zita Johann Director: Karl Freund Synopsis: When archaeologists ignore a warning, they free a mummy condemned for a forbidden love affair. He pursues a woman who resembles his past lover. Runtime: 72 minutes The Mummy's Hand (1940) Starring: Dick Foran, Wallace Ford Director: Christy Cabanne Synopsis: Two archaeologists are surprised by an evil, powerful living mummy while searching for the tomb of the Egyptian Princess Ananka. This is the first film in the "Kharis" series, and is not a direct sequel to 1932's "The Mummy." Runtime: 70 minutes The Mummy's Tomb (1942) Starring: Lon Chaney Jr., Dick Foran Director: Harold Young Synopsis: Vengeful mummy seeks victims in America in cheerfully-cheap horror drama. Easygoing B-film charm bolstered by giddy overuse of stock footage, Chaney's entertainingly-inept performance. Mainly appealing for B-film, forties-horror devotees. Runtime: 71 minutes The Mummy's Ghost (1944) Starring: Lon Chaney Jr., John Carradine Director: Reginald LeBorg Synopsis: Kharis hunts New England for his reincarnated bride in happily-lowbrow, undemanding Mummy film. Chaney's lackluster presence, limp direction weaken enjoyment, though entertain-at-zero-cost mentality appeals to B-film, cult lovers. Runtime: 61 minutes The Mummy's Curse (1944) Starring: Lon Chaney Jr., Peter Coe Director: Leslie Goodwins Synopsis: A mummy couple escape from bayou grave to terrorize locals in final installment of Kharis series. Weak performances fortunately hidden by well-crafted atmosphere, laid-back pacing. Amusing for undemanding horror fans. Runtime: 61 minutes |
