Two college sweethearts, Katie (Barbra Streisand) and Hubbell (Robert Redford), meet after 20 years. At college she was a political activist and he was an athletic jock. At college their separate approaches to life drive them apart. When they meet they are attracted once again and become lovers. She pushes Hubbell to become a good writer, as he has already published a book. He is interested in starting to make movies but she is happy to stay where she is. Eventually they are forced apart by radical differences. They meet again after many years and realize that it was all for the best as both have happiness and success in their lives.
